Happy Free Comic Book Day!

Posted on

Free Comic Book Day is somewhat of a holiday in our household.  If you haven’t heard of free comic book day then you are definitely missing out.  Comic Book shops across North America use this day to give away special free comics to people that visit their shop.  It is a win-win situation.  People that go to comic book shops today get free comics.  Comic Book shops bring traffic into their store that could increase purchases for that day as well as bring more awareness to their business.  Comic Book makers also remind people what is so great about the classic comic book that you can hold in your hands and read.  It is one of my favorite days of the year.

So what does this have to do with Crafting?  Because of the festival/party/celebration nature of free comic book day there are a lot of shops that encourage people to dress up as their favorite characters.  One of my favorite parts of today is people watching and seeing what costumes they thought of and created.  Here are some of my favorites that I have seen through the years.

Yes, this lady is dressed as Ann Darrow from King Kong complete with a fantastic hand made ape hand.

This one I love because the guy on the right owns a comic book store and dressed up like this because his customers wanted him to.  It is a great costume that is REALLY well made!  Plus they look like they are having fun.

This one just shows how much fun it is to dress up with your friends and have a great time!  The comic shop is located in California and looks like a place I would love to go to especially since they all made their costumes!

Finally, I know these are store bought costumes, but this is why Free Comic Book day is one of the best days of the year.  This is a picture from my favorite local comic book shop here in London, Ontario: LA Mood.  We have 4 awesome comic shops and they all get a little bit of my money, but the bulk of it always goes here because of the wonderful feeling I always get when I walk in there.

So if you get a chance to get out there today, stop in your local comic book shop.  You can pick up some free comics, admire some fantastic costumes (hopefully most of them hand made) and just have a great time with everyone around you.
